About this random name generator

A random name generator invents names for you — fantasy characters, babies, pets, and businesses. Naming a game hero, brainstorming a brand, or picking a name for a new puppy? Choose a style, set a gender filter, and get a fresh batch of names in one click.

Pick from four styles: Fantasy (epic first and last names for RPG characters, novels, and games), Baby names (classic first and last name combinations), Pet names (single names that suit dogs, cats, and everything else), and Business names (brand-style combinations for startups and side projects). The gender filter narrows fantasy and baby names to male or female; pet and business names ignore it, since it does not apply to them. Generate up to 20 names per click and copy the list straight to your notes.

Note the difference from our Random Name Picker: the Picker draws a winner from a list you supply, while this Generator invents brand-new names from built-in name banks. Everything runs entirely in your browser — no sign-up, nothing uploaded, your brainstorming stays private.

How to use it

  1. Choose a "Name style": Any style, Fantasy, Baby names, Pet names, or Business names.
  2. Choose a "Gender": Any gender, Male, or Female (applies to fantasy and baby names; pet and business names ignore it).
  3. Set "How many names" (1 to 20).
  4. Click "Generate names" to create your list.
  5. Click "Copy names" to copy the whole list to your clipboard.

The method behind it

Each style draws from its own built-in name bank using crypto.getRandomValues(), the browser's cryptographic random number generator, mapped uniformly across the entries — so every name in a bank has exactly the same chance of appearing, with no weighting toward any entry. Fantasy names pair a style-appropriate first name (male, female, or neutral, honoring your gender filter) with an atmospheric surname like Blackwood or Stormborn. Baby names combine a classic first name with a common surname. Pet names are drawn as single names from a dedicated pet list. Business names assemble brand-style combinations — usually an adjective plus a core word ("Bright Labs"), sometimes with a "Co" ending or a modern -ly/-ify twist ("Techly"). Choosing "Any style" picks a random style first, then generates within it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Name Generator and the Name Picker?

They solve opposite problems. The Random Name Generator invents brand-new names from built-in banks (fantasy, baby, pet, business). The Random Name Picker draws a winner from a list you type or paste yourself. Use the Generator when you need ideas; use the Picker when you already have candidates and need a fair draw.

Can I generate only male or only female names?

Yes. Set the "Gender" filter to Male or Female and choose the Fantasy or Baby names style — every generated name will match. The filter is ignored for pet and business names, where gender does not apply.

Can I use these names for my business, book, or game?

Yes for inspiration and drafting — that is what the tool is for. Before using a business name commercially, check trademarks and domain availability yourself, since the generator cannot verify uniqueness. Character and pet names are yours to use freely.

Are the names I generate saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. The name banks live in the page itself and your generated lists exist only in your current browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, stored, or logged — close the page and your brainstorming is gone.

Worked example

You need 6 NPC names for a tabletop session. Set "Name style" to Fantasy, "Gender" to Any gender, and "How many names" to 6. Click "Generate names" and you might get: Kael Stormborn, Elowen Mistral, Ash Thornwhisper, Mira Blackwood, Dain Emberfall, Sera Nightbloom. Because the gender filter is open, the draw mixes male, female, and neutral first names — each entry in the fantasy banks had equal probability, so the set is a fair sample, not a curated list. Click "Copy names" to paste them into your campaign notes.
