Everyday Money Calculators: Loans, Tips and Percentages

· Guides

Some of the most useful math in daily life is also the most tedious: loan interest, restaurant tips, and percentage discounts. Free online calculators handle the arithmetic instantly — you just need to know which numbers to type in. Here is how to use three of them.

Estimate Your Monthly Loan Payment

Before signing for a car or personal loan, you want to know the monthly payment — not just the interest rate. A loan calculator takes the loan amount, the annual interest rate, and the repayment period, then shows what you will actually pay each month.

Worked example: You borrow $20,000 for a car at 6% annual interest, repaid over 60 months (5 years). The monthly payment comes out to about $386.66. Over the life of the loan you will pay roughly $23,200 — meaning about $3,200 of that is interest. Seeing that total interest figure before you sign is exactly why this calculation matters: a longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises the total cost.

Split a Restaurant Bill and Tip

Nobody enjoys doing tip math at a crowded table. A tip calculator does it in seconds: enter the bill, choose the tip percentage, and it shows the tip, the total, and each person’s share.

Worked example: The bill is $86.50 and you want to leave 18%. The tip is $15.57, bringing the total to $102.07. Split evenly among 4 people, everyone pays about $25.52. No phone calculator gymnastics, no awkward rounding debates.

Work Out Percentages in Seconds

Sale prices, salary raises, and tax all run on percentages. A percentage calculator answers questions like “what is 25% off $120?” without mental gymnastics.

Worked example: A jacket costs $120 with a 25% discount. The discount is $30, so you pay $90. The same tool in reverse tells you that if your $50,000 salary rises to $52,500, that is a 5% raise.
