About this dice roller

An online dice roller gives you fair, instant virtual dice whenever real ones are out of reach. Pick any die — d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, or d20 — set how many to roll, and click once for an immediate, trustworthy result.

This dice roller is built for tabletop gamers, RPG players, board-game nights, teachers, and anyone who needs quick random rolls. Real dice get lost under couches and take time to gather; this tool rolls one die or a whole handful in a single click and shows the “Total: N” instantly, so your game never stalls. Use it for damage rolls, initiative checks, teaching probability in class, or any house rule that needs a number fast. The optional history list keeps a running log of every roll this session, so you can settle disputes about what was rolled two turns ago.

Everything runs entirely in your browser. Each roll is generated on your device — nothing is sent to a server, stored, or logged, and every die is fair and independent of the last.

How to use it

  1. Choose how many dice to roll with the "Dice:" stepper (−/+).
  2. Pick a die type from the select: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, or d20.
  3. Click "Roll the dice" — each die's result appears and "Total: N" shows the sum.
  4. Check the history list for a log of your recent rolls.
  5. Click "Clear history" any time to wipe the log and start fresh.

The method behind it

Each die is rolled with crypto.getRandomValues(), the browser's cryptographic random number generator — the same source used for secure keys. The raw random value is mapped uniformly onto the range 1 to N (where N is the die size, e.g. 1–20 for a d20), so every face has exactly equal probability. Every die in a multi-dice roll is drawn independently: a d6 never "remembers" it just rolled a 6. "Total: N" simply adds the individual results. The history list records each roll's dice, faces, and total for the current session only; it never influences future rolls and disappears when you leave or refresh the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online dice roller actually fair?

Yes. Every die face is drawn from the browser's cryptographic random generator and mapped uniformly, so each face has exactly equal probability — the same fairness as a balanced physical die, without the risk of a worn or loaded one.

Can I roll multiple dice at once?

Yes. Use the "Dice:" stepper to set any count, pick your die type (d4 through d20), and click "Roll the dice". Each die rolls independently, the "Total: N" readout shows the sum, and the history list logs the breakdown of every die in the roll.

What do the die types d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20 mean?

The number is how many faces the die has: a d4 rolls 1–4, a d6 rolls 1–6, and so on up to the d20 which rolls 1–20. These are the standard polyhedral dice used in tabletop RPGs and board games, and this tool covers the full set.

Is my roll history saved anywhere?

No. The history list exists only in your current browser tab and is erased when you click "Clear history" or close the page. Nothing leaves your device — no server, no storage, no tracking.

Worked example

Roll two six-sided dice (2d6). Each die has 6 faces, so there are 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely ordered outcomes. A total of 7 can be made six ways — (1,6), (2,5), (3,4), (4,3), (5,2), (6,1) — so its probability is 6/36 = 1/6 ≈ 16.7%, the most likely total on 2d6. A total of 12 has just one way (6,6), so its probability is 1/36 ≈ 2.8%. The tool mirrors these exact odds because each die's face is uniform and independent.
